Writing Argumentative Essays

An argumentative essay is a paper, in which the essay writer investigates a given topic, gathers data, generates and analyses the evidence to establish a position on the subject of the discussion.

There has been a continued confusion between an argumentative essay and an expository essay. Although the two fields may be similar but an argumentative essay differs from an expository essay basing on level of research and invention involved. An argumentative essay is usually allotted as a final project or capstone project in primary year writing or higher work courses. It involves lengthy and comprehensive research.

An assignment on argumentative essay requires the essay writer to carry out extensive information search normally on existing materials. Argumentative essays may also entail an empirical research in which the student gathers information or data through surveys, interviews and or observations and experiments.

An in-depth research before writing an argumentative essay helps the student to learn more on the topic or subject to come up with the different perceptions about the topic and critically evaluate the different positions to finally support a given aspect of the topic with substantive evidence.

For instance, if an argumentative essay is about the impact of globalization, the essay writer must discuss both sides of the essay i.e. the positives or advantages and the disadvantages of globalization and finally choose on side or both to support with a concluding reason.

The conclusion should be in harmony with topic of the discussion and based on the arguments developed in the essay. Above all, an argumentative essay should establish a coherent thesis and observe sound reasoning. The argumentative essay should exhibit creative thinking of the essay writer.
